| Administrative History | Arthur Jewitt, the father of the wood engraver Orlando and the antiquary Llewellynn Jewitt, was a well known topographical writer and illustrator in the early 19th century. Between 1818 and 1838 he lived at Duffield in Derbyshire. This document is a sketchbook he kept apparently between 1821 and 1826. Places depicted are in York, The Fens and Lincolnshire as well as Derbyshire. The sketches are almost all in pencil and some are very preliminary jottings.The last three drawings in the sketchbook are contemporary pencil sketches by Arthur Jewitt of the scene of the murder in August 1821 of William Cuddie by William Brittlebank jr of Oddo House, Winster. Brittlebank objected to the relationship between his sister and Cuddie, a neighbour who was “a surgeon and apothecary”. He shot Cuddie dead in the garden of the latter’s house and fled the country, reportedly to find refuge in North America. From the later inscription inside the volume it appears that this item passed out of the family but was given back to Georgiana EG Jewitt in May 1914.
