Administrative History | Sir Nigel Gresley was the second surviving son of Thomas Gresley, 4th Baronet, and his wife Dorothy. He married Elizabeth Wynne (d.1793) in 1752. He was a Royal Navy captain/lieutentant who inherited Bowyer property in Staffordshire and supported the construction of "Gresley's Canal" between Apedale and Newcastle-under-Lyme. He inherited the Knypersley estate through his mother Dorothy Gresley nee Bowyer, and the Apedale estate through his maternal aunt, Anne. Through his wife he also inherited the Sidway, Maer Aston, Dedington and Bucknal estates of Jane, also his maternal aunt. |
