DescriptionThis sub-series consists of typed radio play scripts written by Lawrence du Garde Peach, produced primarily for BBC broadcasts between the 1930s and 1960s. The scripts are organised into five thematic sub-sub-series, each focusing on distinct historical and cultural subjects:
1. Heralds of the King – Plays centred on royal figures and events relating to monarchy and political power in British history.
2. Makers of Empire – Dramatisations of imperial figures and explorers, such as Captain Cook and Cecil Rhodes, associated with British imperial expansion.
3. Music Makers – Biographical plays about classical composers including Strauss, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg and Schubert.
4. Biblical and Religious Drama Scripts – Religious-themed plays focusing on biblical figures such as Paul of Tarsus, St Francis of Assisi, David, Joseph, Ruth and Jonah, often grouped into series representing their respective stories.
5. The Storytellers of Britain – Scripts inspired by British literary and historical storytellers such as Chaucer, Malory, Bunyan, Swift, Dickens, Thackeray and George Eliot.
Most items are typed scripts, many featuring annotations or manuscript amendments indicating revisions for broadcast or performance. Some scripts exist in multiple versions, including annotated duplicates or slightly varied editions.
