Administrative History | Benjamin Bagshawe's family lived at Foolow in the parish of Eyam. He himself was a Sheffield solicitor, as was his son. Their connections with Foolow remained close, and it was their Derbyshire background and interests which produced the collection.
This catalogue was created by Sheffield Archives, when the collection was in its custody. The original note on the subject of Custodial History reads: "In the autumn of 1956 the executors of Mr. E. G. Bagshawe (who died in August of that year), gave to the Sheffield City Libraries a large collection of documents and papers which had been accumulated by him and his father, Benjamin Bagshawe (d.1907). The Library also acquired another large consignment of these papers which had passed into the hands of a bookseller. When they were all assembled they comprised a number of sacks containing deeds, a number of metal deed boxes and wooden chests containing books and papers, and numerous cartons of more recent correspondence. The whole collection was in very bad condition, particularly the contents of the metal boxes and wooden chests which were mildewed and very dirty; the bundles of papers in many of them had broken and become hopelessly confused, as well as having been a prey to mice and spiders. Several interesting maps were picked up as they lay torn on a garage floor. The work of cleaning, sorting and repairing therefore took a good deal of time. Eventually, the component parts of a very heterogeneous collection came into view."
The original note on the subject of Finding Aids reads: "The entries for the deeds in this catalogue are reduced from a fuller catalogue ... cutting down the original catalogue entries presented some difficulty, particularly in the case of the early deeds. It was decided to give fairly fully the subject matter including field names, of each of the earlier deeds, and omit the witnesses. It is regretted that it was not possible to include both within the scope of this catalogue. Dates are given in New Style." |
