Description24) William Barker from Smyrna to Mr Thomas Barker at Bakewell. Describes disturbances following the slaughter of a Turk by an alleged Venetian from a Russian ship. Fearing that justice would not be done, the populace came in a body to Frank Street killing Christians and plundering shops. Among the English, Mr. Perkins was the least sufferer. Mr. Barker had his door burnt by falling timbers but his property was saved through the intervention of a Turkish friend. Mentions that Mrs. Perkins (Mrs. Barker’s sister) had a child on the night on the fire on board a ship with 60-70 people in the cabin ‘all fugitives from the shore’. Feels it would be prudent to retire to England. Postscript by William Barker junior asking for shoes. (Framed, and retained by the owner.), 2 Apr 1797
