Administrative HistoryWilliam Broughton Smith (c1833-1883) was the eldest son of Rev. William and Mary Milicent Smith of Dunston Hall, baptised at Chesterfield St Mary and All Saints Church on 7 March 1833. He assumed the name Milnes-Smith in 1873 and was granted the new Arms as per D7666/1/1. He died on 5 August 1883, his estate was later proved at just over £19,000.

Rev. William Smith had inherited Dunston Hall through his father's marriage to his mother, Elizabeth Mary Mower, who was the granddaughter of Richard Milnes, in whose family Dunston Hall had been since the late 16th century.
