Administrative History | The Pierrepont family purchased property in Derbyshire from Christian, Dowager Countess of Devonshire in 1641. Charles Pierrepont was created Viscount Newark in 1796 and Earl Manvers in 1806. His successors included Sydney William Herbert (succeeded as 3rd Earl, 1860, d 1900), Chas Wm Sydney (1854-1926), 4th Earl, and Evelyn Robert (b 1888), 5th Earl. The family exploited mineral rights on their lands by granting leases to local colliery companies including the Grassmoor Colliery Co. The following documents are examples of such leases. |
