| Administrative History | Eckington is one of the ancient parishes in the county. In addition to Eckington, it included the townships of Mosborough, Renishaw and Troway (these were combined for poor law purposes but separate constablewicks and for highway purposes). A church dedicated to St John the Evangelist, was built at Ridgeway (covering the Troway quarter) in 1840. This was created a separate parish in 1843. St Matthew, Renishaw, was a chapel of ease of Eckington, built in 1900. There was also a church, St Luke’s, at Upper Eckington, from 1895. Mosborough (including the mission churches at Halfway and Holbrook, as well as the chapel of ease of St Marks) was transferred to Sheffield (now South Yorkshire) in 1968. The area was later transferred from the diocese of Derby to Sheffield in 1974. |
