Speedwell Infants School, Staveley
Administrative History
The Victorian Speedwell Infants School was built in the 1890s (probably around 1893/4) on Speedwell Terrace (just off Inkersall Road). The building burnt down in Janaury 1969 and was replaced by a new school on College Avenue which was already being planned before the fire. The new school opened in January 1970. When the Staveley Church of England School closed in July 1971, the forty infant children transferred to Speedwell.
It is probable that the earlier records of the school were destroyed in the fire. The surviving log book dates from January 1969, and the first two entries (which pre-date) the fire were probably written from memory. The admission register does not include dates of admission for the first 144 entries. These pupils are likely to be the pupils in attendance at the school at the time of the fire. As there is no earlier register, pupils who attended during the early-mid 1960s but left before the fire in January 1969 are not recorded.

The photograph was donated to Derbyshire Record Office in May 2011, other school records were received on deposit from the school in February 2017.
