Description | Organised by seller and customer, date, quantity of chert (tons/cwt) and price paid. Customers mainly in Staffordshire and Yorkshire. Numerous blank pages between pages of accounts suggest that this volume was expected to be in use for some time. Note on flyleaf by Robert Thornhill, 4 Dec 1971, indicates that these are the accounts of Robert Thornhill, 1740-1820 |
Administrative History | The Peak District Mines Historical Society has indicated that whilst the Holme Hall Chert Mine (see D6967/8) was being actively worked in 1853 (ref: Mining History Vol. 19 No. 6, p.75), it is also known that Robert Thornhill was producing chert from his land on Longstone Common from the end of 1803 to May 1816 (ibid. p.111, Table 8). Therefore it is believed that this volume does not relate to Holme Hall Chert Mine. |
