| Administrative History | Sir Howard Colvin, CVO, architectural historian, was born on October 15, 1919. He died on December 27, 2007, aged 88.
In 1938 at the age of 19, Howard Colvin published his first historical paper, the first of eight, on Dale Abbey. After becoming a Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, Colvin's contribution to his field was recognised in 1965 by the grant of a personal readership in architectural history, allowing him to concentrate his research and writing on architecture, though he continued to teach medieval history until 1978.
He was knighted in 1995, mainly for years of committee work, especially with English Heritage and its forerunners.
One of Sir Howard's most successful campaigns was to save the country house, Calke Abbey, and its contents for the nation. His articles in Country Life on Calke Abbey were the touchstone of the 1983 campaign. |
