Archive CreatorParish of New Mills St George
Administrative HistoryNew Mills, including the hamlets of Beard, Ollerset, Thornsett and Whittle, was originally part of the Hayfield chapelry (see D2426). It became a separate parish in 1831 with the addition of part of Mellor chapelry (see D3858). Until 1857 the Parish was described as Beard. St James' was built by J Mackie, and opened for services on 13 June 1880. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Lichfield on 11 October 1880.
