Description
Shirland Colliery was first sunk in 1864 and by the end of the 19th century, 500 men were employed there. The colliery provided several amenities. These included a bowling green and the miners' welfare club. The latter is situated in Main Road and still survives, despite the pit having closed in 1965. These records relate to the brass band that was based at the miners' welfare club. The band were affiliated to the North East Midlands Brass Bands Association and the National Brass Band Club.
