Archive CreatorSt Andrew's Middle Class School, Litchurch
Administrative HistorySt Andrew's Middle Class School, Litchurch, Derby, was founded in 1869. Its headteacher was George Sutherland, FRGS (1845-1899). The school taught the three Rs, history, languages and the sciences, as well as a range of vocational subjects such as book-keeping, shorthand and technical drawing. Pupils paid fees for attendance, and the school paid annual rents to the diocese for the buildings, plus a capitation fee for each pupil. The school closed towards at the end of the nineteenth century. (Kelly's directory mentions St Andrew's in the 1895 edition, but not in 1899.) The closure may have been connected with the 1899 expansion of Derby Municipal Technical College into new buildings, which took place while Sutherland was serving as secretary to the Technical Instruction Committee of the Derby Corporation.

For an example of a pupil's exercise book, see D4920/10/1. This item is listed as a volume of teachers' meeting minutes relating to Derby's Swedenborgian Sunday School, but the minutes were written in an old exercise book belonging to Arthur Duesbury of St Andrew's Middle School. This child was the brother of Henry Dexter Duesbury, whose letter of apology is included in D6808/3/1.
