Administrative History
The Outram family's connection with Ripley began with Benjamin Outram (1764-1805), assistant to William Jessop on the construction of the Cromford Canal and founder with him and other partners of the Butterley Company in 1790. The company became the leading engineering and coalmining enterprise of its day in the area around Ripley, Benjamin Outram purchased Butterley Hall in 1790 and made it the family home.
