Bowles family of Abney
Administrative History
The Bowles family claimed descent from King Edward II through their connections with the Burton and Borough families. The family owned estates at Abney and in Chapel en le Frith centred on Bradshaw Hall. An interest in family and local history was promoted by two family members, Charles Eyre Bradshaw Bowles and William Henry Bowles. The latter privately published his 'Records of the Bowles Family' which is of particular interest because of the destruction by fire in Wirksworth in 1901 of the family home which contained many original family papers.
