Title
Thorpe Social Service Committee
Date
1919-1930
Description
Thorpe Social Service Committee was set up at a meeting on 24 Jun 1919 with a remit "combining work for parochial purposes and for the British Red Cross Society". It organised fundraising events such as sales of work, concerts and whist drives, and its members gathered together sacks of second hand clothing to send to people in need. The British Red Cross was not the sole beneficiary of the group's activities: the minute book records donations to e.g. the Alexandra Musical Society for Wounded Soldiers, the Japanese Relief Fund of the Church Mission Society and the Romanian Red Cross. The Committee resolved in a meeting of 22 Jan 1930 that "as the Rev R F Borough does nto think there is any further necessity for the existence of the Thorpe Social Service Committee the balance [of its funds] be given to the Parish Room Fund". A subsequent (and final) meeting of 19 Feb 1930 rescinded this decision, opting instead to spend the money on some curtains for the altar hangings in the parish church.
