Administrative History | Sir Nicholas Leeke or Leake (1612-1680/1), 2nd Earl of Scarsdale, established a dole of bread to the poor of Sutton cum Duckmanton and [South] Normanton to be distributed on St Nicholas's feast day, 6 December. This description of the dole is taken from the report of John Ashbury, cook to Sir Nicholas, who accompanied him during the Civil War when Leeke defended Newark when it was besieged by the Scots army. |
