TitleDefendant's plan
Date1860s
DescriptionMap used in Conway v the Clay Cross Company, heard at the Midland Circuit at Derby on 7 Mar 1868. According to The Times (9/3/1868 p11), the plaintiff was a hawker of lace and millinery living in Alfreton who, on 6 December 1864, lost an arm after being knocked down by a Clay Cross Company truck passing down the incline. The jury found that the Company had not been negligent, accepting its claim that the trucks were very slow-moving and that the woman had contributed to the accident by being drunk.

The map shows the area from Office Row to Clay Cross Station, including spoil banks, Smoky Green Cottages, iron works and North Wingfield church. The map also features a dotted red line and points marked A (between the ironstone pit and coal pit No 1) and B (north of the gas works) and a note that the red line probably indicates the track that Ann Conway took, "as Chatterton saw her fall down at point marked A and the accident occurred at point B". Scale 1 inch: 2 chains
