Administrative History | Ilkeston Gas, Light and Coke Company was formed in 1847 with its Gas-Works in Rutland Street. The company was bought by the Local Board for £25,000 in 1879 and was taken over by the Town Council in 1887. The works was sufficient to supply the town until t1936 when it became essential to completely reconstruct it in order to be able to satisfy the demand for gas; the new works was opened in 1937.
The Corporation remained responsible for the town's gas supply until the undertaking was nationalised in 1948. ('Municipal Government in Ilkeston 1887-1974' p12) |
