| Administrative History | The founder of Hall's printing business was William Hall who, in 1832, began his printing career as an apprentice for the printer James Storer. When Hall's apprenticeship ended in 1839, Storer moved his printing works to Victoria Street in Derby, and Hall continued to work for him. In 1856 Hall took over the running of Storer's business, which was relocated to Green Lane and renamed Green Lane Printing Works. Assisted by his two sons, William and James Henry, the senior William Hall ran the business until his retirement in 1901, at the age of 82. Following his retirement, William the younger and James Henry ran the business, but William died four years later, leaving James Henry as the sole proprietor. The firm was officially registered as J.H. Hall & Sons Ltd. in 1919, James Henry's sons being William and Percy.
In 1941 an agreement was made with another printing firm, W.H. Boden & Company, by which they shared Boden's premises at 80 Macklin Street, Derby. In 1946 the trading business of W.H. Boden & Co was taken over.
The Hall family gave up control of the business in 1960. A number of shareholders then controlled the business until, in 1995, the Company was bought by David Ottowell, who moved business operations to Little Eaton.
