Description | Fine three-quarter view of one of the powerful six-coupled 'J94s', with a tractive effort of 23,870 Lbs. These locomotives had a relatively short wheel-base, and were ideal for the tight curves of the CHPR. The original design was of 1943 for the Ministry of Supply. They were bought from the MoS in 1946 by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and designated as Class 'J94'. All LNER locos with the prefix 'J' had a wheel arrangement of 0-6-0 regardless of either being a tank or tender engine. 68013 carries the shed plate for 17D and was transferred to the CHPR in December 1956. 17D was the shed code for Rowsley, of which Middleton Top was a sub-shed, although Rowsley was re-coded to 17C in April 1958. W Marples is in the cab. |
