DescriptionAn impressive view from near the Catch Pit below the A6 skew stone arched bridge towards Sheep Pasture Bottom and Cromford Goods. Note the inclined rollers to control the alignment of the wire rope for the curvature around the catch pit. No doubt the broad skew arching of the bridge reduced its strength compared with a conventional arch, and was the factor that led to the rebuilding of the bridge to cope with increased lorry weights on the A6. The broad, flattish arch was necessary when the railway was operational to give sufficient clearance below the bridge with the 1:8½ gradient. On the far side of the bridge the road was widened or strengthened using iron girders at an unknown date.
