TitleHeage Windmill
Date1894
DescriptionPhotograph of the aftermath of a serious incident in February 1894, with presumably the miller standing on the wreckage of the sails after a severe storm. At this time it had only four sails. The mill was purchased in 1850 by Issac and Joseph Shaw, and after rebuilding continued in regular use until 1919 operated by Joseph and Enoch Shore, the sons of Thomas and later T J (Tom) Shore.
Note the mill wheels propped up by the wall. Behind and immediately above the left hand mill wheel is Heage Methodist Chapel, and at the time of the photograph was on the edge of the village. Behind the chapel was the site of Gun Lane Colliery, whilst Crich Lane runs along the hillside below the horizon. The windmill is situated at about 400 feet above sea level, whilst the distant horizon above Ambergate reaches to 540 feet.
