Title
Wirksworth Goods Yard
Date
1961
Description
General view of the yard looking north to the substantial six-arch Cemetery Lane bridge that is beyond the goods shed. Immediately to the left of the telegraph pole is the line leading to the tunnel under Wirksworth to give rail access to Dale Quarry, it was opened on the 17th November 1877. Note all the wagons of limestone in the background presumably from Stoneycroft Quarry. The flattish plateau above the standard gauge lines in front of the left side of Cemetery Lane bridge was the former site of the narrow gauge tipping dock of the tramway which ran beneath the garden of the Station Master's house to Baileycroft Quarry. The Station Master acted as agent for the sale of Earle's Cement, hence the sign on the goods shed.
