DescriptionThe Stephenson & Manchester Locomotive Societies tour after the passengers had disembarked for the visit to Middleton Top, prior to walking down Middleton Incline. The two "J94s" seen in 17/2/29 are at the head of the train. Note the very unusual water tank converted from an old riveted boiler and supported on cast-iron columns identical to those supporting the beams inside Middleton Engine House. Clearly these must have come from one of the abandoned engine houses, perhaps Hopton Engine. In the background is the distinctive block post cabin controlling access to the single line section between Middleton and Hopton Top. Between Middleton Top and Parsley Hay, operations were by 'train staff & ticket', in four sections with dividing points at Hopton Top, Longcliffe Goods and Friden. On the right in the foreground by the wall is the ½ mile post in front of the gate formerly giving access to the private siding in Redhill Quarry. Beyond the gate is Intake Quarry Tip.
