Transcript or Index | D6287/5/5/1 Döberitz, den 11 Jul 1916 Dear Madam I have received today your parcel of groceries for which I am very thankful, in fact one hardly knows how to express oneself to be able to thank you enough for your kindness and thought in these dark days. I have not yet received any card letting me know that it was coming. If you have wrote I shall be able to write you again when it "the card" arrives. Yours very thankfully W. Marke
D6287/5/5/2 Döberitz, den 18 Jul 1916 Dear Madam I have just received another parcel dated the 29th June, this making the third, the contents of all being correct according to enclosed lists, they are also of a most sutable nature, could not have selected anything better myself. I am most grateful to you for your kindness. I hope one day to be able to thank you personally. Would you like to have some of our souvenir postcards? should be only too pleased to send them along if you wish it, some of them will show you that we are making the best of it. Now must close. Yours gratefully W Marke
D6287/5/5/3 Döberitz, den 3rd October 1916 Madam I have received all parcels up to & including 7th September and found everything correct according to lists enclosed. I have enjoyed the contents very much, & found the spirit lamp very handy first thing in the morning. I have not yet had another PC from you so do not know if I should be taking a liberty in sending any of the cards I mentioned in one of my PC. Anyhow I am chancing one this week, a gymnastic display in which I took part. Yours gratefully W. Marke Sergt
D6287/5/5/4 Döberitz, den 31st October 1916 Madam I have received all your parcels up to the 5th of this month, the contents of all being correct according to lists. I thank you very much for your kindness. With reference to your P.C. of the 10th I think bread is beginning to arrive all right & would be very pleased if you could replace biscuits with bread. Now to tell you something of myself and family, I was born at Hanwell, Middlesex where my people are still living, in 1904 joined the East Surreys serving with them until 1910 when I was transferred to the Army Gymnastic Staff & sent to DCLI at Bodmin, where I met my wife. I have two daughters, one of which I have not yet seen. At the outbreak of war I had to rejoin the E.S.R. my wife prefering to remain at Bodmin with her people. I was one of the very unlucky ones to be taken prisoner at Mons on the 23rd of August so you see I have been caged now for over two years. Yours gratefully W. Marke Sgt
D6287/5/5/5 Döberitz, den 6th February 1917 Madam I am sorry to have kept you so long without writing, but at Christmas time one has so many friends to write to, that at other times of the year does not matter. The parcels under the new scheme are quite good, although they have not the pleasing effect that the ones packed by yourself had. You know we miss those little fancy things that we have been used to, which we know too has pleased our friend at home in packing. Anyhow I am very thankful to you for still sending to me through tthe Committee. I will write you from time to time as before. Yours very gratefully W. Marke Sergt
D6287/5/5/6 Döberitz, den 24th April 1917 Madam I have received your post card of the 21st 3/17 & am sorry that I have kept you so long without an answer. I thank you very much for your kindness in still continuing to send me parcels through the Committee, which are quite good & arrive regularly, & for the interest you have shown in my well being generally. With reference to books, I should like three, medium, elementary, & Advanced Physiology & Anatomy, you will have to write to the Board of Education & they will forward them on. Yours gratefully W. Marke Sergt
D6287/5/5/7 Kriegsgefangenenlager Soltau Z 3032, 25th August 1917 Dear Madam Many thanks for books which I received a few days ago, they are just what I required, & I am sure they will help me considerably in my branch of the service when the war is finished. You will be pleased to know that the parcels are arriving regularly & in good condition. Looking forward to another move shortly. Yours gratefully W. Marke |
