TitleMuggington House Row Book
Dateearly 19th Cent
DescriptionPrinted book with spaces for entries to be made by hand. Inside front cover has a printed warning: 3 shilling penalty to be paid to Overseers for destroying or losing the book. First page has a printed list of 26 inhabitants of Mugginton "liable to take men by the round" and number of days in each round. All subsequent pages have a printed heading requiring entry of details about daily wages, about victuals and signature of Churchwarden or Overseer.

The House Row or Roundsman practice was a development within Poor Law provision whereby men out of work would be given short-term work at very low wages supplemented by poor relief. This book, however, has not been used for its original purpose. Every page is filled with a comprehensive chronological list of mayors of London from 1191 to 1685. There is no indication of who made the list or of when it was made
