Administrative History | Francis Bassano was a member of a distinguished family, chiefly of musicians, established in England since the 16th century. Francis became known as a 'herald painter' and antiquary. He travelled Derbyshire copying funeral hatchments, memorial windows, etc from churches. He lived in Derby, as did his younger brother the musician Christopher Bassano (1679-1745). A non-contemporary inscription in this 17th century volume notes that it was purchased by Christopher Bassano in 1715, but its content makes an association with Francis Bassano more likely. The volume passed through several hands before it was given to the Revd Charles Kerry, the antiquary, on 23 August 1888. |
