Description
The signature of Henry Sacheverell is written near the beginning of the book with a note undereath in a 18th/19th century hand identifying him as Henry Sacheverell who died in 1620.
At the end of the text are a series of lined pages in which are written family information and notes. They begin with the dates of birth of the children of Jasinthe and Elizabeth Sacheverell: Henry in 1619, Dorothy in 1623 and twins Raphe and Richard in 1624.
A note on a following page reads: "Henry Sachev[er]ell filius Joan Sack De Morley In Comitatu Derby Armiger hoc de se testimoniu[m] probuit et in postern reliquit mensis August dies xvj an[no] 1508. Oxon ja' Aula Glocest. (Henry Sacheverel, son of Joan Sack of Morley in the county of Derby, Knight, his will was proved and written here for posterity on the 16th August 1508 at Gloucester College Oxford [now Worcester College]).
On the following page are written Latin proverbs in a different, probably earlier hand:
Qui que vult dicit, que non audiatt (he who says what he wants, let him hear what he does not want)
Felix quem faciunt aliena pericula cautum (happy is he who takes heed of the dangers others do)
?G[o]de nasturtium
Lupus est in fabula (the wolf is in the story, i.e. the Devil’s here)
Underneath have been added the names and probably birth years of members of the Wardley family in the 19th Century: Charles Wardle 1833, Mary Wardle 1836, Arthur Wardle 1857, Herbert Wardle 1859, Beatrice Wardle 1862, William Wardle 1865, Rosa Wardle 1868. Underneath this is written the address of Denis Roy Bentham 1962-
The following pages have practice letter shapes and jottings in Latin, probably dating from the 15th to 17th centuries.
