Appraisal
The plans have been sampled: all items from the earliest box have been retained (from the late 1880s-1890s), as have most plans and files lodged in years ending 1 (from 1911 onwards), plus all plans from an intermediate box dating from the end of 1901 to the beginning of 1903. The following plans were missing on transfer: 17, 19, 24, 26, 30, 35-45, 55, 60, 63, 82-85, 87, 92, 95, 133, 795, 822, 834, 856, 865 and 891
Arrangement
The index to the corresponding register [D5624/1/2] does not give any dates for the plans up to D5624/2/150, although the register itself (D1931/3/1/1) indicates dates of 1889-1891. Some of the plans are dated, but are likely to have been produced a few weeks or months before they were lodged with the Council.
D5624/2/751-900 were found in one box. The index to the corresponding register [D5624/1/2] does not give any dates for the plans. Most of the plans are dated and stamped with the date of approval by the Council. Plan 751 was drawn on 10 Jun 1901; plan 900 was drawn on 13 Mar and approved on 19 Mar 1903.
The reference system for the building plans up to 1936 is confusing. Various alphanumeric references overlap. The original building plan registers up to 1923 are numbered D1931/3/1/1-4 but they use a previous numbering system unrelated to the alphanumeric system by which the plans were classified. The index volumes have been used to attempt to find all plans from 1911, 1921 and 1931 but the full series may not have been transferred. There are no references to any plans dated May-Jul 1921 in the index to the appropriate register [D5624/1/3].
