Samuel Barton and Sons of Ashbourne and Fenny Bentley, clockmakers and precision engineers
Administrative History
The Barton family clockmaking business was founded in 1900 by Samuel Barton (1850-1929) and was continued by his three sons and his grandson until the firm closed on the retirement of Stewart Barton in 2001. By the mid-20th century the firm had begun to specialise in precision engineering. Its workshops were at 15 North Leys, Ashbourne. In 1970 the Drysdale Works at Fenny Bentley were purchased. The Ashbourne premises were sold in 1975. The products of Samuel Barton and Sons include the Manchester cathedral clock and the clock on Cubley parish church. Most of their work in later years was for the Manchester Water Meter Company.
