Administrative History
Francis Ley owned Vulcan Ironworks on Vulcan Street and Harrington Street, Derby by the1880s. He sold the property to Ley's Malleable Casting Co Ltd in 1902. The company also acquired in 1908 the Wellington Foundry on Osmaston Road which was built on Lime Pit Close, previously owned by Ley.
Ley built a recreation ground next to the Vulcan Ironworks. He was very interested in the United States of America and introduced baseball to the recreation ground which was then known as the Baseball Ground. In 1925 the Baseball Ground was sold to Derby County Football Club and became the club's home until 1997. Ley was remembered in the naming of the Ley Stand.
Parts of the property was sold to Ewart Chainbelt Company in the mid-twentieth century.
