Further Information | 'Miseries of Human Life', by James Beresford, was first published in 1806. In 1808 Rowlandson published a series of forty-nine plates illustrating scenes from the book (BM Sat 10816-63). It is not clear whether these designs by Woodward relate to the book, or are simply developing the idea of 'Miseries'. Some are different versions of designs by Rowlandson. The subseries includes prints etched by both Rowlandson and Cruikshank, although these may be unrelated except in series title. |
