The Corsican Nurse Soothing the Infants of Spain

Description
In the middle Napoleon sits in a chair holding two babies. These are the younger sons of King of Spain, the infantes Don Carlos and Don Francisco. They have padlocks round their neck. The King and Queen sleep in the 'IMPERIAL CRADLE' on the right, over which is written 'THE GOOD OLD KING AND HIS AMIABLE CONSORT'. On the left Ferdinand also sleeps in an 'IMPERIAL CRADLE' labelled 'Prince of Austurias'.

This is a play on the Spanish word 'infante', meaning prince. After Spanish revolt in March 1808 Charles IV abdicated in favour of his son Ferdinand and the royal favourite Godoy was dismissed. Napoleon lured the King, Queen, Ferdinand and Godoy to Bayonne. Napoleon forced Ferdinand to restore rights to King - he was interned at Vallençay, and the others were pensioned off in France
