| Description | Three strips, arranged in rows. Row 1. A recruiting officer with two yokels A cat playing the violin to a monkey. "That strain again" is an adaptation of the Duke of Orsino's speech at the beginning of 'Twelfth Night'. A skeleton and a woman. "Lady lay your costly robes aside" is taken from the old English poem 'The Messenger of Mortality; or Life and Death Contrasted in a Dialogue between Death and a Lady'. A young woman and cupid.
Row 2. A man and a woman wearing a low cut dress with large ostrich feathers. The woman mentions 'Ranelagh' referring to the fashionable pleasure gardens of the same name. Two men playing nine pins. A woman presents colours to a soldier for valour. A monkey and a cat, both clothed, play shuttlecock.
Row 3. A man displaying a camel. A crowd of men annoy a woman with an over-turned barrow. Two men play dice. A man and a clergyman drinking and smoking. Available on CD 161. |
