Title
Grotesque Borders for Rooms &Halls : No 15
Date
1 Aug 1799
Description
Three strips arranged in columns.
Column 1.
Two Lilliputian men with sticks talking. One says: "Since you mean to hire for service ( … )" which is a line from 'Midas', a mock Italian burletta by Kane O'Hara, first performed in London in 1764.
Fat man in a chair with dentist/servant. A woman is having her hand kissed. The servant mentions 'Horn Fair', which was a fair held in East London since medieval times. Local tradition claimed that it began with King John after he compensated a miller whose wife he had seduced, with a sizeable grant of land. The fair began with a procession from Cuckold's Point, and the large man in the picture appears to be being cuckolded by his wife.
A balding Lilliputian man greeting a plain woman.
A man disputing the bill with his architect.
Column 2.
A country bumpkin commenting on the boots worn by a young man in riding gear.
A Lilliputian servant complaining to his master that his livery is too small.
A mother commenting on her son's regulation regimental wig. Long 'queues' continued to be worn by soldiers long after they had gone out of general fashion.
Death calling on a miser.
Column 3.
A Lilliputian father sits with a baby on his lap, watched by the mother.
A clergyman is served his dinner by a maidservant.
A Lilliputian man addressing a woman wearing a crown of vine-leaves: "Come thou Goddess fair and free", a line from 'L'Allegro', by John Milton (1608-1674).
A clumsy servant is scolded by a gouty master.
