Title | French Prisoners |
Date | 10 Jul 1783 |
Description | A procession of seven chained and emaciated prisoners (three-quarter length) walk from right to left. The first is dressed in a blue coat and red waistcoat. His face is lined and he wears his hair in a pigtail. Behind him is a man in a white cap and jacket, with a crucifix around his neck, looking upwards. Next to him is a boy, also chained, wearing a red jacket, with his hair loose and his eyes closed. Behind the boy is another man in a white cap and coat and next to him a man in a blue jacket, with his hands in his pockets. He wears his hair in a pigtail and has his eyes closed. The last man in the line is wearing a red jacket and has something dark, perhaps a muff, in his hands. Only the face of the man next to him is visible.
On the verso is a pencil sketch, possibly a face. Available on CD 157. |
