Further InformationThe Whig politician Fox (1749-1806) often referred to himself as the 'man of the people'. The addition of 'black' refers to his swarthy complexion.

There is a printed caricature of Fox with the same title by Woodward (BM Sat 7874), but the drawing and the print are only superficially similar.
