"Shylock / ____________ I crave the law | The penalty and forfeit of my bond"
Charles Macklin (?1697-1797) was born in Ireland and undertook a variety of jobs before becoming a strolling player. He made his debut at Drury Lane in 1733 and premiered his Shylock in the 1740-1741 season. Shylock had hitherto been played as a comic character. Macklin however went back to Josephus and the Old Testament as part of his preparation for the part. Retaining the customary hooked nose, red hair and Venetian dress, he added a beard and hat. His was perhaps the defining interpretation of Shylock, performed in a naturalistic style which owed much to Garrick.
