Charles Bannister (1741-1804) was born in Gloucestershire, and began working as a strolling player, working on the Norwich/Ipswich circuit. He was initially rejected by Garrick for Drury Lane, but began acting there in 1767. He was one of the founders of the Drury Lane Actors' Fund. He was famous for his playing of Caliban, and played it at Drury Lane six times in 1784-1785 season, beginning on 9 Nov 1784, and again on 3 Dec 1786.
