"Benedict / ____________ Which is Beatrice? | Beatrice (unmasking) I answer to that name; what is your will?___ Act V Scene the Last."
Mrs. James Abington, née Frances Barton (1737-1815) was born into a humble London family. She began selling flowers in Covent Garden Piazza and was known as 'Nosegay Fan', before working as a maid and ballad singer, amongst other jobs.
She made her debut at Haymarket on 21 Aug 1755. In 1759 she married James Abington. After a spell in Ireland she joined Garrick's company at Drury Lane in 1765. In 1782 she moved to Covent Garden.
Mrs. Abington played Beatrice at Covent Garden on 21 Jan 1785, 26 Jan 1785, 1 Nov 1785, and 24 Jan 1786.
