Mrs. Joseph Inchbald (née Elizabeth Simpson) (1753-1821) was born the daughter of Catholic farmers from near Bury St Edmunds, in 1772 she married an actor twice her age, who helped to coach her for the stage. She was a close friend of Mrs Siddons' and in 1783-1784 was on the stage at Covent Garden. She later turned to writing plays, which proved to be more profitable than acting. |
