According to Grose's 'A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, a Jessamy is 'A smart jemmy fellow, a fopling'.

In the printed version (BM Sat 7783) the character is wearing very similar clothes and is standing in a similar pose, although facing the other way. The preliminary drawing for the print was probably not the drawing at the DRO.
