Title
Correspondence relating to the Dod family of Cloverley Park, Shropshire
Date
1791-1820
Description
This series contains personal letters between John Dod, his second wife Eleanor (née Woodyeare), her sisters and brothers in law Charles and Mary Tibbits, and Fountain and Frances Elwin, and her mother Frances Woodyeare.
The series also contains a large number of letters relating to Thomas Pares II's trusteeship of the estate of John Dod following John's death in 1805. Thomas's sister Anne (died 1780) had been John Dod's first wife. The letters, largely concerned with the sale of some of John's estates, including Walton near Chesterfield, and the administration of the estate for the benefit of his infant children, are predominantly between Thomas Pares II, Charles Tibbits, John Knight of Whitchurch, W W Davies, and W B Thomas of Chesterfield (of the legal firm Messrs Slater and Thomas). Letters were circulated between the parties and added to before posting on; they often include copies of previous letters added for information, as the trustees were widely spaced geographically and rarely met in person. The business letters also often include personal notes between female members of the family, added on to the end.
Letters are arranged chronologically.
