Title	Papers of George Mundy RN (1777-1861)

Description	The third son of Edward Miller Mundy I (1750-1822) of Shipley Hall and his first wife Frances Meynell, George entered the Royal Naval Academy in 1789. In 1792, at the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars, he graduated and became a midshipman on HMS Blanche, followed by HMS Pegasus, HMS Victory and HMS Juno. On Juno he was involved in the Siege of Toulon (1793) and the invasion of Corsica (1794). He continued serving with the Mediterranean Fleet and saw action at the Battle of Cape St Vincent (1797) and the Battle of the Nile (1798), following which he was promoted to commander of HMS Transfer, serving off the port of Cadiz. After the French Revolutionary Wars ended in 1802, he remained in service, briefly becoming captain of HMS Carysfort for a few months in 1802, and subsequently HMS Hydra from October 1802 to September 1810. During the Napoleonic Wars of 1803-1815, Hydra captured a number of French ships, including the brig Furet in 1806, and was involved in the bombardment of Begur in 1807. George Mundy was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1815 and captain of the royal yacht Royal George in 1830, the same year that he was promoted to Rear Admiral. He became Knight Commander of hte Order of the Bath in 1837, Vice-Admiral in 1841 and full Admiral in 1849. In June 1820, George Mundy became MP for Boroughbridge, Yorkshire, on the interest of his brother-in-law, Henry Pelham-Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle, who was actively involved in Tory politics. George had a stroke in 1830 and retired when parliament was dissolved that year on the grounds of ill health. He died unmarried at his home in Grosvenor Street, London, in 1861 at the age of 83.
