Title
Letter from George Mundy, at sea, to Admiral Lord Nelson.
Date
[1830s]
Description
Mr Tyler, promoted to lieutenant by Nelson, has gone absent without leave. Writes to explain the circumstances “in extenuation of the faults of a very young man”. States the sudden departure from duty in Malta is due to “an unhappy intimacy with a female, who was the cause of his neglecting his duty”. Requests Nelson to intercede with the Admiralty so he would not be discharged. With note in George Mundy’s hand that the Admiralty accepted the request, but only when it was put to them directly by Mundy. Adds that Tyler later claimed to have been “driven from the ship by my tyranny”.(contemporary copy)
