Papers of Edward Miller Mundy I (1750-1822)
Description
Edward Miller Mundy I was the only son of Edward Mundy and his wife, Hester Miller of Shipley Hall. He had three sisters: Hester (1737-1800) who married Sir Roger Newdigate of Arbury, Warwickshire; Nelly (1739-1813) who died unmarried; Millicent, who married James Barton of Penwortham, Lancashire. His parents both died in 1767 and his sister Hester managed the Shipley estate until he reached his majority in 1771.
In 1772 he married Frances Meynell (1753-1783), the eldest daughter of Godfrey Meynell with whom he had six children: Frances (1773-1797), Edward (1775-1834), Godfrey Basil (1776-), George (1777-1861), Frederick (1778-1846), Henry (1779-).
In 1788 he married Georgiana Middleton (d.1789), nee Chadwick, the widow of the 4th Lord Middleton, with whom he had one daughter, Georgiana Elizabeth (1789-1822).
In 1811 he married Catherine Barwell with whom he had one son, Robert (1813-1892).
In 1772 Edward Miller Mundy was appointed High Sheriff of Derbyshire. He was elected Member of Parliament for Derbyshire in 1783 and held the seat until his death in 1822. In 1803 he was appointed Colonel of the 2nd Derby Regiment of Militia. In 1817 he was a member of the Grand Jury at the trial of the men involved in the Pentrich Rebellion.
