TitleLetter from George Mundy RN to his father Edward Miller Mundy with news of the war
DateMar 1815
DescriptionStamped 'Rochester Ship'. Places mentioned include Gibralta, Malta, Minorca, Naples, Palermo. Ships Berwick, Boyne, Volontaire. Details of meeting Lord and Lady William Bentinck, who had dined with the Prince of Wales. Other dignitaries mentioned include Lord and Lady Sandwich, Lord and Lady Malpas, Kings of Sardinia and Etruria. Intelligence about Murat [Napoleon's brother in law, Marshal of the Empire and admiral under Napoleon] confirmed he had attemped an unsupported insurrection in Italy. This showed him to be a traitor and on the advice of the ministries and other powers, the Naval Senior Office had declared and waged war upon Murat, regardless of Lord Exmouth's views. Unsure of the hazardous decisions and preferring to remain a few days in situ, as he had not been there since the fracas with the French frigate laying there, Murats troops are deserting him and the Austrians have flogged his outposts. Reports delays in receiving English news and was sad to hear of the death of George Ellis.
