Title | Letter from George Mundy RN to his father Edward Miller Mundy giving details of skirmishes at Mongat near Barcelona |
Date | 1 May 1809 |
Description | A very detailed description of how George escaped 200 French infantry on the beach at Mongat, HMS Hydra under his captainship engaged in a chase. An amusing tale of how Radford, possibly one of Mundy's crew, had escaped the French infantry by foot and then a packet ship. He found himself surrounded by the French squadron (he mistook them for English). He was alongside a French vessel before he realised his error and got away by holding up some fish to the French officer in attendance who refused them. He immediately cut the rope and fortunately made an escape as the French were in the act of making sail in pursuit of Hydra. Further news of the enemy and British progress. Received a positive missive from his superior about his conduct. |
